The EU arms itself, Schlein: "Increasing military spending to 5% would mean the end of the welfare state in Italy"

During the Festa dell'Unità in Rome, Elly Schlein launched a frontal attack on the Meloni government on foreign policy and military spending. The secretary of the Democratic Party contested the idea of increasing the Italian military budget to 5% of GDP, an increase that according to estimates would amount to about 87 billion euros per year .
“We voted against it. Such spending would put the welfare state at risk, from health services to public schools,” he said. “Meloni says: if you want peace, prepare for war . We say: if you want peace, prepare for peace .”
Schlein also criticized the internal contradictions within the majority on foreign policy and called for a clear commitment to European integration, against the ambiguity of those who support nationalist governments.
